“A young monk, camping near the edge of a precipice, realized that he had been discovered by a distant tiger. The beast was now bounding toward him. The canyon prevented any escape, but looking over the edge the monk saw a few inches of rock jutting out just six feet below. As luck had it, there was also a shrub growing out from the side of the cliff just below his feet. He used the shrub to climb down and then clung to it while he perched on the short span of rock. Above him appeared the tiger’s head peering greedily; below him was a sheer drop to the distant boulders. The monk thought “I hope he tries before I do.” Waiting, thus between tiger and ravine, the monk noticed that this shrub was a strawberry bush and that some of the berries were large and ripe. With a free hand he plucked one and bit into it. He was amazed at how sweet and juicy it was. He savored fully its perfume flavor.” ~The Positive Psychology of Buddhism and Yoga : Paths to a Mature Happiness
Day 93: Enjoy the flavor
You don’t need to be a monk on the verge of death to have the most delicious food of your life. As you eat your food focus only on the taste. Is it salty is it sweet. Enjoy the food, don’t just eat it because you must. To make this easier try going at least 8 hours before eating. That first bite of food will be incredible, and you can start to share in the same experience as th monk.
