Sit in silence | Day 38

Day 38 of 365 new ways to a new you. Congratulations, you have made it this far. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Are you ready for tomorrow? This is part of a series that is going to span 365 days. Some things will be subtle other activities will be more involved. At the end of the 365 days even if you do only 20 of these things you will be a new person, for better or for worse.

People tend to have an unspoken fear of silence. While most people may not believe that they are afraid of the quiet; most of them are. People constantly need background noise. The background noise can be music, tv, radio, or even the sound of an appliance. Without background noise, most people will get uncomfortable.

Day 38: Sit in silence
Try and seclude yourself from all background noise. Go to as quiet and silent a place a possible. Sit there, close your eyes and listen. Focus all your attention and purpose on listening.

Pay close attention to how the silence makes you feel. Pay attention to your instinctive reactions as well as your body’s own natural sounds. Sit in silence for at least 30 minutes. The longer you stay secluded the more aware you may become of yourself and your surroundings.
